LWR 92.5 ROLL CALL!
Founder Of Solar Radio
A symbolic nod to Tony Monson who joined LWR during the Johnny Heywood Keith Green (John Dawson) era, circa 1982-1983. Before leaving to join JFM on the station’s expansion to a 24-hour transmission during early 1984, then moving again that year to Chris Stewart’s Horizon, for a few months until the station was forced off air later that year (October 1984). Tony quickly returned to the airwaves, just a month later. But this time with his own station called, Solar (Sounds Of London Alternative Radio) and a line-up that included several ex-Horizon presenters.
Solar disappeared from London’s airwaves in October 1988 – after a DTI raid.
Shortly after a new opportunity to apply for FM licences was announced, its rumoured that Tony aborted Solar Radio’s application, to present a joint effort with Kiss, which he perceived as stronger. However, Tony was side-lined soon after it was confirmed as won by Kiss. Although he did join the newly licenced Kiss again, but this time just as a presenter.
In 1999 he went on to re-launch Solar (on a Sky satellite channel – they stopped broadcast on the platform, May 2019, after 20 years – the internet and more recently DAB) of which he is currently Director and continues to present a show on the station. [Words: Jay James]
