Spikey Tee is a soul fuelled, A list, reggae educated, hip hop asserted, jungle/dnb globe trotting man, Spikey (the person) takes all this influence from his music into his life. He is an amazing character, a roving British-Jamaican, charming, uber-cool and a witty rabble-rouser. Spikey, like a fine cured JA Rum, travels superbly well, unlike his famously reclusive home-loving cousin, Bunny Wailer. All of which (obviously amongst other things) binds together to make a truly great man, this becomes blissfully obvious when Spikey (the artist) steps on stage, be it with a band or with a simply inspiring DJ set.
With the very latest music and his ubiquitous zeal for the cause. This guy is the real original. In a world where artists survive 20 seconds, it is a direct link to his talent that this year marks Spikey Tee (the artist) 33rd year as an active participant in the culture of music. As a renowned Singer/Artist/ producer who shot to fame with the UK rap pioneers, The Sindecut in the late 80’s early 90’s. Touring with Soul ll Soul, later fronting the inventive Jah Wobble with his dulcet singing tones.
With all this experience it still hasn’t become just a business for him, it’s life and that’s why he’s still around today, with every one of his musical journeys making a statement and a permanent attachment to the listeners soul… You might have heard the name ‘Spikey Tee’ floating around New Zealand. Rightly so, as he was the touring vocalist for the Auckland band Sola Rosa for 7 years, unleashing his angelic voice in the studio. Also DJ’ing across many lands, absolutely laying down the law from reggae to drum n bass and all his influences in between. What is commonly known as ‘mash up’ sets these days, Spikey’s execution of this is and will continue to be legendary.
His Drum and Bass sets have earned him admirers all around the globe. New names for an old game when it comes to dealing with Spikey. Impromptu guest vocalist with Morcheeba at the Days Like This Festival in Sydney due to the track “Friction” on their “Big Calm” album, a record that Conscious Rebel Music is very proud of. (I’m continually humbled to work with such a truly, talented, gracious and absolute joker of a human) Also recently collaborating with the likes of Roots Manuva, A Sides & Makoto, Dizz 1 & Bukem in Thailand & Australia. Finally after many years of making everyone else’s albums sound amazing, his solo album entitled Between Wake And Sleep which is a testimony to his musical life…
I’ve purposely left out everything that he’s done in this blurb, because the list is far too long, but if you were to exercise your right to Google, the realisation will be that Spikey has been in your life longer than you realise This is an enormous year for us, the listener as we take this journey around the world with Spikey the DJ, the singer artist and producer, so grab on for the ride because people like Spikey do not come round very often. Put that on a stage or behind a pair of turntables and Spikey Tee (the artist) will simply take that and give you a performance that will make you feel larger and more positive than anything you could ever imagine…
