A pop station reinvented as a black music champion 1983 – 1990

THE DAY AFTER THE SWITCH OFF!
This article in the UK national newspaper The Mail on Sunday (New Years Day, 1st January 1989) confirmed LWR who shut down the previous day on New Years Eve, Saturday 31st January 1988, as the biggest unlicensed station ever, with an average weekly audience of (over) 2 million listeners across London and it’s surrounding counties.
LWR had lost a staggering total of 457 transmitters (possibly over half that number just within the final 2 years, as well as dozens of studios) during it’s 6 year history under Zak. More than twice the number lost by any other unlicensed station in the UK. [Words: Jay James for LWR Archives]
